LABICANE, Edward Ted
1928 Lloydminster SK
2014 Calgary, AB
Ted, beloved husband of Constance, passed away Friday, September 12, 2014 at the age of 86 years.
Ted grew up amid the dust bowl of the Great Depression, in a small town: both railways carried thousands of unemployed WWI veterans.
During this time Ted worked with his dad. Preparing drilling sites with horses and scoop shovels. This experience fuelled his life-long dream and love for exploring oil. This drove him to graduate with honors from King Edward High School (later named Strathcona Collegiate) and later to be proudly given the RCAF airmen Harley-Miller-Sutton trophy, which honors pilots close to his age, who made the supreme sacrifice in WWII.
Teds education in radar continued on with the RCAF, located in Clinton/Centralia and Station Crumlin, London ON. Then after WWII he returned home and attended the University of Alberta and obtained a BSc in geology, he then studied at the University of British Columbia to receive a BA.
His career started as a geophysical trainee with Imperial Oil. He was then employed with Unocal Subsidiary as a geophysicist, with United Geophysical as a seismologist, with Phillips Petroleum, and Pacific Petroleum. Lastly he was employed with Petro Canada, from which he retired in the mid 80s and became a founding member of the European Association of Petroleum Geoscientists.
Ted was a longtime oilman and geophysical interpreter for more than 35 years and he was proud of his accomplishments in oil and gas and also his RCAF training in signal theory used in seismic processing.
As a founding member of Lakeview United Church, Ted (and wife Constance) always found Jesus Christ and the assurance of gathering at the river a great source of comfort.
Ted belonged to the RCAF auxiliary 418 Squadron located in Edmonton.
Ted will be dearly missed by his wife of 60 years Constance; his son Robert (Susan) in California USA and his daughter Elspeth (Chad) Dannish; grandchildren Maxwell and Noland in Edmonton AB.
Ted was predeceased by his sister Elizabeth Pluim as well as his five brothers. Teds motto was in Morse Code: three dits, four dits, two dits, daw and Cest la Vie.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
