Obituary of Norman DOBELL

Norman passed away at Bethany Care Centre November 15, 2010 following a courageous seven year battle with Parkinsons Disease. Norman was born in Edmonton where he received his early education; then went to Winnipeg to earn his degree in Architecture at U of M. In 1955, he returned to Edmonton where he worked with Rule Wynn & Rule until 1959; and then was invited to join the Prack and Prack firm in Hamilton, Ontario. Norman returned to the west in 1979 when he moved to Calgary and established Norman Dobell Associates Architects. He had a highly successful career, was awarded three national awards for housing, and designed many structures across Canada, including: Canada Games Pools, Fieldhouses, Jack Simpson gymnasium at U of C., office buildings, schools, retail stores, residential communities and Health Care Facilities. Norman loved to travel, loved to entertain, and loved Broadway Musicals and had several friends in the entertainment world. He knew how to live. He loved his family and was the "best". Norman leaves his loving wife of forty-eight years, Jo-Anne; sons Marc and Neil (April); grandchildren: Arielle and Nathan to whom he was the Best Poppa and ice cream maker; sister-in-law, Leslie Willis (Ron); brother-in-law Terry Farrant (Marion); many nieces and nephews; as well as close family friends. He was predeceased by his father Conrad; mother Irene; sister June Foster, and brother-in-law Rick Farrant. The family wishes to thank the Bethany Care Facility for their loving care of Norman. A Celebration of Normans Life was held at Webster Art Gallery, 812 - 11th Avenue S.W. on Saturday, December 11, 2010 from 3:00 7:00 p.m.
