Obituary of Ella MARGACH

Please share a memory of Ella to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Ella Elizabeth Margach (nee: Barker)passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2011 at the age of 90 years. Ella was born July 3, 1920 in Calgary to Donald and Elizabeth Barker. Ella grew up in the Sunnyside and Hillhurst districts of Calgary and graduated from Crescent Heights High School in 1938. Following graduation Ella took a business course and worked for an insurance company and then at MD13 during the war. Recreationally, Ella enjoyed cycling and was an award winning target shooter. In 1947 Ella married Bill Margach and together they raised four sons living first in Bankview and since 1952 in Parkdale. While her boys were young and Bill was on the road, Ella maintained order on the home front. Ella read endless stories to the boys, worked with them on their school work, taught them how to darn their hockey socks and helped them succeed in their many activities. There seemed to be a never ending number of bake sales, father and son banquets and requests for creating Halloween costumes or repairing torn blue jeans or teaching Sunday school, but Ella never seemed to tire or despair. She claimed that helping to raise two younger brothers prepared her for sons of her own. Each summer she and Bill took the boys camping (not her favourite activity) because she knew her boys enjoyed tenting and would learn to love to travel. While caring for her family, she acted as care giver to her mother and her aunt during their final illnesses. She was a remarkable woman and a wonderful mother. Ella is survived by sons David (Lori), Don, Doug (Wanda) and Duncan; grandchildren Julie (Mike) Phillips and Paul Margach; great-granddaughters Georgia and Nicola Phillips; brothers Don Barker, Art (Jackie) Barker and Bob (Hazel) Barker; and sister-in-law Dorothy (Bud) McDonald. Ella was predeceased by her husband Bill in 2006. Funeral Services will be held at St. Barnabas Anglican Church (1407 - 7th Avenue N.W.) Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Graveside to follow at St. Barnabas Anglican Church Cemetery.
