Obituary of Audrey Daisy DAHM

Please share a memory of Audrey Daisy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with sadness that the family of Audrey Dahm announces her passing on September 20, 2011. Audrey was born and grew up in St. John’s, Newfoundland. It was in St. John’s during the war that she met Eddie, one of those prairie boys who joined the navy to see the world. Eddie was a handsome sailor who loved to dance, and they met at one of the regular dances held for the troops. Being good dancers, they hit it off and the rest, as they say, is history. They married in 1945 and Audrey travelled across Canada to the West as a war bride on a train full of returning troops. She fondly remembered this trip as one of the best parties ever! Eddie and Audrey settled in Calgary and had three kids, Susan, John and Judy. Life in Calgary, Red Deer and Lethbridge was spent with family and good friends. Mom and Dad spent some of their best times together handicapping the horses and going to the horse races. Somehow Mom could always out-handicap Dad, a source of great humour for the family. The best family times were our annual vacations to Flathead Lake in Montana, where the family was often joined by good friends. Many “frisco fogs” and lots of Alberta beef were enjoyed by all. Mom always had a job, aside from looking after three kids. She enjoyed working as a retail clerk at Eaton’s and the Bay and was always on the look-out for a good bargain. We sure missed those discounts when she finally retired. The best part of her work according to Mom was laughing and joking with her co-workers. She never took herself too seriously and always enjoyed a good laugh. Life had its ups and downs but in the end Audrey said that she had had a pretty good life and she had no regrets. This past summer her sister from Florida, Sylvia Smith, came to visit for a few weeks. They had not seen each other for a number of years. It was great to see the two sisters together reminiscing and laughing over the old stories. It was a blessing and a reminder to all of us about how important family is. Thank you Sibbie for coming. Audrey loved being with her family. After her 85th birthday celebration this spring, Audrey wrote in her notebook: “We had a good time. I have the greatest family in the world. They are all so good to me. May God bless them all. Mom”. We loved her and most importantly she knew that she was loved. We will miss her for sure. Audrey was predeceased by her parents George and Ethel Saunders and her husband Eddie Dahm. Audrey is survived by her daughters Susan (Clark) Beatty and Judy Dahm; her son and daughter-in-law John and Janet (Grabner) Dahm; grandchildren Julianne Beatty, Jasmin Dahm and Eddie Dahm; and sister Sylvia Smith. Thanks to the caregivers and staff at the McKenzie Towne Care Centre for the many years of great care given to Audrey. Mom always had positive things to say about you and realized that she was in good hands. At Audrey’s request, there will be no Service. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made in memory of Audrey and Eddie Dahm, directly to the Calgary Poppy Fund, Royal Canadian Legion Branch Poppy Fund, #1, 4539-6th St. NE Calgary T2E 3Z6; or online at www.canadahelps.org (search for Royal Canadian legion Branch Poppy Fund Calgary).
