Obituary of Irmgard SCHLAGER
Please share a memory of Irmgard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Our Mom and Omi was born on May 12, 1929 in the Free State of Danzig and she died on Thursday, September 29, 2011 in Calgary, Alberta after a courageous battle with cancer.
Omi witnessed the first shot of World War II. Her family fled Danzig during the War and they were refugees in Germany. Omi came to Canada in 1950 to work on her uncles farm in Brooks Alberta. She married Franz Schlager in 1951. They lived in Brooks, then Olds and finally moved to Calgary where she lived in the same house for 56 years. Omi was fiercely independent, a loyal friend and was a person of many talents. She did every kind of handicraft, worked on a landscape crew, learned to drive gravel trucks and tractors, do the electrical wiring for mobile homes and the finishing work in her house. She learned to bake from her father who was a master baker and she loved to share her bread and cookies. She loved to travel, grow her vegetable garden, have dinner parties with friends and share her handmade chocolate truffles with all.
She leaves a legacy of love and memories for her daughter Erika Schlager {Terry Brown); her granddaughter Kirsten (Blaine) Coupal; her family in Germany; Fritz (Rosi) Lamek, Inge Lamek, Meta (Dieter) Lunkeit, Helmut Lamek and their families; her family in Canada: Bob (Elsie) Strach; Helen Sekura, Lore Rowland, Mary ONeill, Marty Schlager and their families and all her many friends.
She was predeceased by her husband Franz Schlager, sister Erika Kronshage, brother Herbert Lamek and nephew Jurgen Kronshage.
A special thank you to the family and friends that supported Omi throughout her battle with cancer. Your help, food, visits, phone calls, and letters meant a great deal to Omi during this difficult time.
The family would also like to thank the palliative care staff from Home Care and Agapé for helping Omi keep her independence and dignity.
