Douglas Petrie of Calgary passed away on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at the age of 92 years. Doug was born in McGrath, Alberta on February 9, 1919. He was married to Ivy, his beloved wife of 55 years. Doug served in the Armed Forces from August 1941 until September 1945. He flew Halifax and Lancaster bombers over Europe while stationed in England during the Second World War. He was discharged with the rank of Flight Lieutenant. When Doug returned home, he resumed his career with Canada Post, sorting mail on trains all across Canada. Doug and Ivy were foster parents to twenty-eight children through the years and after retirement they enjoyed being “Santa Elves”. Doug is survived by his brother Allan (Audrey); nieces Patricia and Leanne and their families; nephew Allan; sister-in-law Dorothy Binning and family; nephew Roger Fletcher and family; as well as many dear friends. Doug was predeceased by Ivy in 2007; parents Lucy and Alexander Petrie of Lethbridge; and brother James. Funeral Services were held at CALGARY CREMATORIUM CHAPEL, 3219 – 4th Street N.W., (within the valley of Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Thursday, December 15, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Graveside Services to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery in the Field of Honour.
