Obituary of George DUNN

Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of George Dunn. George was born in Raleigh, North Carolina. He served 28 months with the U.S. Army during WWII, seeing action in New Guinea and the Philippines. While with the army he started to box, primarily to avoid KP duty. Once he left the army he found he had a love for boxing and in 1946 he began a professional boxing career which brought him to Canada. He and Lillian first came to Edmonton, where Ivy was born, before settling in Calgary, where King and Holly were born. The family stayed in Calgary and after his boxing career ended he became the equipment manager for the Calgary Stampeders. He remained with the Stampeders, where he was affectionately known as ‘Dundee’ from 1961-1977. During his boxing career George fought as a light weight and was ranked as high as Number Seven in the world. He was honoured by the Edmonton Boxing Commission in 1990 for his contribution to boxing in that city. Dad was a compassionate and charming man with fast, sharp wit and a sense of humour. He was a kind-hearted free spirit who displayed an easy-going demeanour. He will be remembered for his love of family, friends and his ‘Pinch’. The words that best sum up much of his life are by his favourite singer, Frank Sinatra, “I did it my way”. He is survived by his children Ivy, King and Holly (Paul); and his grandchildren Paris, Dante and Marco to whom he was “Papa George”. He was predeceased by his loving wife Lillian of 57 years. A private family service will be held. Forward condolences through www.hffs.com. The family would like thank the many staff from Bethany Harvest Hills Care Centre for their loving care and compassion.
