Obituary
Obituary of Lloyd GILLETTE
Please share a memory of Lloyd to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
On December 21, 2011 Lloyd Glen Gillette passed away in his home in Calgary at the age of 80 years.
Lloyd was very proud of his roots, being raised on the family farm West of Penhold. He began his schooling in a one-room schoolhouse, then continued on to Red Deer Composite High School where he made many lifelong friends. He was an active athlete; you could find Smoky Gillette playing on a number of baseball and hockey teams in Central Alberta. Lloyd obtained a BSc in Geology at the U of A in 1955, where he was an active member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity. After graduation, he started his career with Imperial Oil. Lloyd chose to leave Imperial after 12 successful years, and together with Jack Stephen, went into business where they opened the first of many One Hour Martinizing Drycleaning locations in Calgary and Red Deer. He and Jack Stephen had a special partnership and worked together for 41 years. Lloyd was an active supporter of the Triwood Community and a proud member of the Calgary Winter Club (CWC) where he served on the board and was president in 1983-84. Lloyd loved the CWC and all of the opportunities and activities it provided for him and his family. He enjoyed playing badminton, tennis, squash, bridge, golf (at Country Hills) and more recently as a member of the +55 Choristers. Lloyd loved listening to music and played the piano by ear. He attended many years of concerts at the CPO and enjoyed many naps courtesy of Theatre Calgary. He and Gwyn were faithful Stampeder fans for over 30 years. Lloyd and Gwyn also traveled extensively throughout the world during their marriage. Lloyd will be always remembered as a man of integrity. He was a humble, gracious, generous, honorable man with a mischievous sense of humor.
He is survived by his loving wife Gwyneth of 54 years; his faithful furry companion Teddy; daughter Joanne; grandsons Matthew and Logan; son Greg (Candace); granddaughters Savannah, Abbey and Julia; son Jason all of Calgary and his sisters Lois Simpson (Stan) and Peggy Evans of Red Deer. He leaves behind a large, loving, extended family and a wonderful circle of friends and neighbors.
He was predeceased by his daughter Maureen; parents Bert and Elsie Gillette and seven of his brothers and sisters.
Family and friends joined together to celebrate Lloyds life and his final Happy Hour at the Calgary Winter Club on, Friday January 6th, 2012 in the afternoon 2:00 5:00 pm. A special thank you to Lloyds family physician, Dr. P. Dunham and Dr. Roman and his pulmonary team for all of their attention and care. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Samaritan Club of Calgary (Suite 503, 1500 14th Street S.W. T3C 1C9) or the charity of your choice.
