Obituary of Wilhelmina HOLLENBACH

Wilhelmina “Mieke” Hollenbach passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2012 at the age of 88 years with her loving family at her side. Mieke was born in Utrecht, Netherlands on October 28, 1923. After living a full and meaningful life she will be reunited with her best friend and loving husband, Geert; who passed away in 1985. Born in Holland Mieke was known for her intelligence, energy and charm. She was passionate in all that she did. Mieke’s lovable personality and demeanor landed her a position as the first female announcer in Holland where she later was the host of her own game show, “Hoe is de stand, Mieke?” In 1953 Mieke and Gerry moved to Canada where she continued to work in radio, television, and journalism sharing her love of Holland and its culture with Canadians. Mieke was the honored recipient of the Knight of the Order of Orange Nassau. Her love for the outdoors was a perfect match for the Canadian landscape; she remained an avid traveler throughout her life. Mieke remained devoted to her friends, family and Dutch heritage- such values helped shape her philosophies of life. Mieke was a unique woman who was compassionate, eloquent and loved by so many. Mieke is survived by her sons Jerry and Ronald (Christine); grandchildren Justin, Dana and Tessa; daughter Gwen (Larry); grandchildren Kalee and Carlyn. In accordance with her wishes there will be no funeral service. A memorial bench is planned for Nose Hill Park.
