Obituary of Waltraut NEUFELD

Waltraut (Traute) Ingeborg Margarete Neufeld of Calgary, formerly of Brooks (Millicent) passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 9, 2015, at the age of 83 years at Brentwood Intercare Center. Traute, as known by friends and family, was born on August 22, 1931 in Potempa, Gleiwitz, Schlesien, Germany. She immigrated alone in 1954 to Canada, arriving in Montreal on October 7, 1954 with $7.50. She traveled by train to Calgary where she worked as domestic help for a family in the Okotoks area. After one year she relocated in Calgary, where she became part of the German Canadian community. She worked at a bakery in Bowness at which time she met her husband Hans Otto. They were married four month later and began their life in Calgary. In 1965 after their children were born they followed their dream by purchasing a farm in the Brooks (Millicent) area where they lived and worked until retirement. Following the death of her husband in 1992, she sold the farm and moved to Brooks. She remained an active part of the community; enjoyed community gatherings, travelling, golfing, playing cards, but her greatest joy came when family would visit for the weekend. With a longing to be closer to her two children, Susan (Rod) Hegland, and David (Laurie) Neufeld, four grandchildren, Mark, Steven, Jared and Benjamin; as well as one great-grandchild Emily, Mom moved to Calgary in 2009 where she resided until her passing. Mom will always be remembered for the hospitality she showed by hosting friends and family that visited, as well as for her faith in Jesus, her strength and courage she had to face the obstacles of life, her loyalty and faithfulness to friends, and deep love she had for her family. Funeral Services will be held at CALGARY CREMATORIUM CHAPEL, 3219 – 4th Street N.W., (within the valley of Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Thursday May 14, 2015.
