Obituary
Obituary of Hazel Irene TURNER
Please share a memory of Hazel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Hazel Irene Turner of Calgary, AB on December 11, 2015 at the age of 94 years. Hazel passed away peacefully early Friday morning surrounded by family.
William John and Sarah Emily Langridge welcomed Hazel into this world and raised her and her two brothers in Calgary. She graduated from Crescent Heights High School followed by postsecondary secretarial school. Hazel loved to tell stories about her dad’s sense of humour, her mother’s strictness, her older bother’s “spoilt” wildness, her younger brother’s gullibility and her role as a bit of a pot stirrer in that mix. Hazel shared many stories with her family about the “road trips” her dad loved to take them on as far away as Long Beach, California.
Hazel met the love of her life, Roy in a United Church young people’s group and married our dad/grandpa in 1943. She lost both of her beloved parents by the time she was 26. She filled that void by being a loving mother, homemaker and later a grandmother/great-grandmother. She loved sewing making Halloween costumes for her young children and later pajamas for her grandchildren.
In 1959, she became a resort owner in Nelson, BC with our dad. The resort became a focal point for the family as we all spent our summers working there including all nieces and nephews.
Hazel retired in 1973 to Creston where she found another passion, painting. Her medium was not canvas but just about everything else from wooden boxes to watering cans. She has left us all with pieces of her work including her adored Rudolf and eight Reindeer which she brought to life with her skill. She loved tending to her rose garden and taking her grandchildren on long walks.
She returned to Calgary in 2004 to be closer to family and they resided at the Seniors Residence at the Colonel Belcher. Her new passion became knitting dolls and teddy bears for charity. She enjoyed being a Welcome Wagon ambassador greeting new residents. Hazel never lost her cognitive abilities and never lost her sense of humour.
She leaves a legacy of unconditional love for each of us and that love is returned to her tenfold. She will be dearly missed.
Those of us left behind to remember and treasure those memories are sons Richard (Theresa) and Frederick (Margaret); daughter Patricia (Peter); grandchildren Michael, Patti, Shelley, Bobbie, Daniel and Gregory; great-grandchildren Taylor, Grayson, Aleksandr, Leo, Aaden, Kenzie, Jesse; sister-in-law Barbara Langridge; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Hazel was predeceased by her loving husband of 67 years, Roy Turner; and her brothers William and Bruce.
In keeping with Hazel’s final wishes A Memorial Service will be held at CALGARY CREMATORIUM CHAPEL, 3219 – 4th Street N.W., (within the valley of Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Monday, December 21, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Deaf and Hear Alberta, 63 Cornell Rd NW, Calgary, AB T2L 0L4; Telephone 403-284-6200; website www.deafandhearalberta.ca
The family cannot begin to express the depth of our appreciation to Homecare at the Colonel Belcher and to the staff at the Wentworth Manor DAL unit and palliative unit for the care provided to our mother and grandmother at the end. Thank you so very much.
