Obituary of Gerald Matthewson BURDEN

Please share a memory of Gerald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather Gerry (Gerald) Matthewson Burden at the Peter Lougheed Centre on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at the age of 92 years. He died at peace with the world after a life of adventure, accomplishment and enjoyment. Gerry was born April 2, 1924 in Regina, SK, where he grew up during the Depression with his parents and sister Joan. In 1948, Gerry married Jean McNeill in Saskatoon. They enjoyed 63 years of marriage, raising their family, travelling and enjoying their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gerry graduated from the University Of Saskatchewan Law School in 1949. In 1951, he put down roots in Calgary and began a legal career in the oil and gas industry, starting with Imperial Oil. His career included a 29 year cherished relationship with Ken Hayes and Greystone Resources. Gerry was honored to serve the Alberta Law society passionately for 66 years, and he was active in his profession until his death. Gerry was known for the many contributions he brought to the community and the lives of those around him. He served as Chairman of the Calgary Board of Education during the 1960’s and 1970’s. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Mount Royal College from 1975-1981. Although he loved Calgary and Alberta, Gerry remained proud of his Saskatchewan roots. He was a devoted Saskatchewan Roughrider fan and a proud shareholder of the team. In honour of his devotion to the Roughriders, Gerry’s name will be engraved on a granite wall on the new Mosaic Stadium in Regina. Gerry is survived by his children Brenda (Myron), Susan (Bert) and Bruce (Jan); four grandchildren, Scott(Stephanie), Sarah(Leighton), Justin(Skyla) and Brennan (Jas); as well as seven great-grandchildren. Gerry was predeceased by his wife Jean in 2011 and his sister Joan. At Gerry’s request, there will be no service. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to Unit 43, Peter Lougheed Centre, www.calgaryhealthtrust.ca. The family would like to thank the devoted doctors and passionate medical staff of unit 43, Peter Lougheed Centre whose dedication to supporting Gerry in his last days was unparalleled, with a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Echo Enns.
