Obituary of Herman William ARVIDSON
Herman William Arvidson of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at the age of 97 years.
Herman was born on April 24, 1920 near Winnifred, Alberta to Gerda and Peter Arvidson and grew up on the family farm near Three Hills, Alberta. Even though Herman subsequently worked and lived in Calgary, he always had a special affinity to the Three Hills farm; he was very proud that it continues to carry the Arvidson name, and that it is still currently being farmed by his nephew Merl and his family.
Herman achieved an Agriculture Diploma from Olds Agricultural School in 1940. He then served in the Royal Canadian Air Force for five years during WWII. Herman was a breadman for Weston Bakeries for twenty-one years. In the late 1960’s he joined SAIT, where he worked until his retirement in 1985.
Herman had great relationships with his grandchildren and their children; was proud of their accomplishments and always ensured they were on the right path. He had great relationships with his many nieces and nephews and many of their children as well. He thoroughly enjoyed keeping in touch with all through visits and phone calls. Herman was a very social person and had many close friends over the years.
Herman had a great life and made many many people smile. To quote one of Herman’s sayings “he had a head on his shoulders”.
He is survived by his two daughters, Carol (Graham) Hawkins and Nancy (David) McDougall of Kelowna; grandchildren Erik (Kim), Kristian (Janet), Ryan (Amanda), Lindsay (Phong) and Jamie; great-grandchildren Audrey, Sophia, Vivian, Jack, Henry, Parker and Connor; many nieces and nephews; as well as special friend and sister-in-law Hazel Arvidson of Three Hills.
Herman was predeceased by his beloved wife of forty years Henny (Jacobsen) in 1988; and his siblings Oscar (Margaret) Arvidson, Albert Arvidson, Annie (Russel) Andrews, Clara (Dick) Spry, and Jenny (Lewis) Hill.
There will be no funeral services as per Herman’s wishes.
Many thanks to the staff at Carewest Garrison Green for their compassionate care.
