Obituary of Barbara Joanne Manly

 

It is with both sadness and gratitude for a life well-lived, that we announce the peaceful passing of Barbara Manly (Nuttall/Smith) of Calgary, AB, who passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2019 at the age of 84 years.

 

Barbara was born and raised in the beautiful village of Advocate Harbour, NS. In 1954, Barbara travelled to Halifax and began her nursing education at Victoria General Hospital. This was soon after, she met her first husband, James Tobin Smith. In 1957 they moved to Calgary, AB, and settled to raise their five children. While raising her family, Barbara was a nurse at the Grace and Foothills Hospitals. Barbara was deeply respected for her skills and care for patients, by both doctors and fellow nurses. Barbara spent her entire career in the health services industry until her retirement in 1999. She was also recognized in the Calgary community for her incredible volunteer and charitable efforts. Barbara spent years as the President of the Women's Canadian Club. She worked tirelessly to promote awareness and raise funds for the Calgary Lupus Society as a long-standing President of the organization. Barbara also enjoyed volunteering for the Calgary Stampede with her husband Ken Manly and they were well known in the square dancing circles.

 

Barbara had many passions. She was an avid reader, a patron of the arts, a wonderful baker and loved good discussion of current events. Barbara’s greatest joys were her family and her friends. She was a loyal and lifelong friend to all who knew her. She enjoyed nothing more than to be surrounded by her loved ones; spending time together at family dinners and holidays, as well as receiving countless visits and daily phone calls kept her smiling and engaged.

 

She will be lovingly remembered for her strength of character, lively sense of humour, and warm hospitality.

 

Barbara is survived by her five children; James Aubrey (Laura), Timothy (Shannon),Tom (Donna), Christopher (Maiko) and Nancy (Rob); grandchildren, Jeremiah (Nicole), Ashley (Adam), Jared, Caleb (Jordan), and Nicholas; as well as her six great-grandchildren; eldest sister, Elvie Knowlton of Windsor, ON; the Manly family, Pat, Ken (Sandy), Bill (Sharon), Ian, and Dusty; as well as numerous nieces and nephews in eastern Canada and the

Maritimes.

 

Barbara is predeceased by her parents, John and Nema Nuttall; her three brothers, Gerald,Roland and Walter; first husband, James Tobin Smith in 1987; and her second husband Ken Manly in 2002.

 

Funeral Services will be held at Urban Grace Church, 823- 64th Ave NW, on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at 2:00PM.  Reception to follow at the church.  Internment to follow at a later date in Advocate Harbour, NS.
