Please share a memory of Margaret HANLEY to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Margaret Hanley Gould of Calgary, passed away on January 23, 2014, after a lengthy illness at the age of 94 years.
She was much loved and will be greatly missed by her family: sons and daughters-in-law, David Hanley and Irene in Calgary and Eric Hanley and Toni Laidlaw in Halifax; grandchildren Brian and Stuart Hanley in Calgary, Emily Gibbons in Winnipeg and David Hanley in Toronto. Marg was predeceased by her daughter, Susan Hanley; and her husbands, Dr. William Hanley and Irving Gould.
Marg was born in Edmonton September 30, 1919, grew up in Ottawa, and graduated from the University of Toronto (Victoria College and the School of Social Work). Moving west with her family, she arrived in Calgary in 1953. She loved the mountains, and in her 50s joined the Alpine Club of Canada. Another love was music: she was a member of the Calgary Recorder Society, and in Edmonton, the Richard Eaton Singers. Marg worked as a social worker/counselor for the Calgary Family Service Bureau, and for the City of Edmonton, returning to Calgary after Irving died. She was a social and environmental activist for many progressive causes, including Voice of Women, Council of Canadians and the Raging Grannies. Her last years were shared with her long-time friend and companion, Drake Shelton.
Marg requested there be no funeral service, but a Celebration of Life is planned for June 1, 2014 at 1:00 PM at the Unitarian Church of Calgary, 1701 1st Street NW.
The family wishes to thank Drs. David Sparkes and Paul Petrasek for her earlier medical care; the staff at Prince of Peace and Bowview Manor; and a special thanks to Julie Lee for being there with kindness and positivity during her difficult last few months.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to a charity of their choice.
