Obituary of Dick BABOTT
Dick Babott passed away peacefully with his girls by his side on Friday, June 7th, 2019 at the age of 62 years.
Dick and Donna had a love story for the ages; it all began when he saw her across the street on Westover drive. He married his soulmate and best friend; they recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in April with a trip to Maui. Dick was a proud father of two badass girls, he supported them in any way he could; by playing King Triton at the pool, coaching baseball, sitting as EKO dance board president and being their honorary brownie leader –bald owl.
He cherished many family vacations to Vancouver Island with his three girls. Dick travelled the world with his wife, often their happiest trips were tucked away in the mountains close to home. He enjoyed planning large family gatherings which are not complete without a big bucket of Dick’s famous potato salad.
Dick’s career started as painter decorator by trade which led to instructing the painting and decorating program at SAIT. Teaching came naturally to him and sparked a passion for making a difference in young adult lives. While working and raising a family, Dick enrolled at the University of Alberta where he received a Degree in Education at the age of 50. He later became an Academic Chair for the School of Construction at SAIT, where he managed construction-based training for indigenous communities, summer camp programming, and three dual-credit programs. Dick retired from SAIT in 2018 after 35 years of service.
Dick will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humour, quick wit and desire to bring the fun to every occasion as a teacher, father, husband, brother, friend and stranger.
Dick was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta and was a proud family man. Dick is survived by his loving wife, Donna Babott (nee Cameron); his two daughters Ashley Tompkins (Chris) and Courtney Babott; his first grandson Wilder Richard Tompkins; along with his brothers Mike (Cheryl), Dan (Cheryl), Tim (Traci) Pat (Cheryl) and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Dick was predeceased by his father Joe and mother Marie and his brother Bill.
Dick’s celebration of life will be held Friday, June 14th, 2019 from 2:30- 4:30pm at SAIT in the MacDonald Hall.
Memorial donations can be made to The SAIT Summer Camps Bursary Endowment allowing families facing financial hardship to send their child to a SAIT Summer Camp bit.ly/2F1yhKS
