Joel was a soft spoken, thoughtful, generous and kind person. We enjoyed hearing his perspectives on topics that ranged from animal behaviour to politics, and are sorry that future opportunities to visit with him have come to a sudden and premature end. Over the years Joel was our companion during outdoor activities, took photos for us at family events, sold us a TV, and bought from us a car we were no longer using (a silver Honda Accord). We speak for ourselves and many others when we say that we were lucky to have had Joel Duncan as part of our lives.

This is farewell for now my brother. No matter how distant we were we remained close and that will never change. I will miss you in this life as will so many others, but we will meet again. As Grampa Duncan would say, “I’ll see you in the funny papers!”

Joel was such a wonderful person, my favorite memory I have of him, was in 2017, while Angela was teaching me wood working, we all made dinner together, it was one of the best dinners I've ever had, he was an amazing cook, and so spirited, he was so full of happiness that it just radiated off of him like a heater, he had one of the most infectious smiles, and he knew how to make anyone laugh. My greatest condolences to his family, and to Angela, he will be missed.

Upon seeing seeing a stand of tall pines Joel declared loudly that he felt like he knew each one on a deep and personal level — that’s Joel right there.
Man could he tell a story. The enormous Spanish grapefruit that he encountered on his Eurasian tour will always be in my head.
My deepest condolences to Angela, uncle Bob, aunt Norma, Shawn, Kelly, Tracy, and all his family and friends
Joel opened many doors for me. He was my cousin and ten years my senior. I took to him right away and somehow knew we would be friends as adults. We shared an apartment for a while in Guelph and he taught me darkroom photography. He enhanced my appreciation of nature, birds, art and general life-y-ness.
He took my family to the Mount Tyrell Dinosaur Museum — my 8 year old son had a blast. I’m glad he got to know him. One of the best times was visiting the Andy Warhol interactive exhibit at the Kitchener Children’s Museum. We made Andy Warhol silkscreens in quiet but intense competition with the kids. I think the lady thought we were slightly deranged. Mostly I’ll miss just hanging out and talking. Still hard to believe. Joel, I’ll miss you brother!

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Joel. He had a good heart and I was glad I remained in contact with him over the years. We played scrabble online. Touched base on FB. Shared birding stories of our adventures. Huge hugs to all. Stephanie Gislason ( formerly St. Clair)

Our condolences for the Duncan family, and fondest memories of Joel visiting us in Toronto as well as hanging out with him at many get-togethers in Dalhousie. We always admired his love for the outdoors, and was inspired by his acting roles and creative pursuits.
With Love, from Evans/Coles family

Joel and I kept in touch occasionally despite living thousands of kilometers apart. The idea was always there, that we would meet up again some time, but alas it cannot happen now, which saddens me deeply. He was a faraway cousin who was never distant. We have lost an attuned and gentle soul. My deepest condolences.

Joel's unflinching generosity of spirit during our conversations over the years has been a gift to me. I'm thankful for all of those moments.
I will never forget our exciting and joyful Crokinole games at our extended-family christmas parties, both as cunning adversaries and in our dominating partnerships.
Sending love and condolences from Steve, Yulenda, Idris, and Lennox.

My husband & I send our deepest condolences to Joel`s family and Angela. Joel was an employee at our store in Guelph about 40 years ago. He quickly became a dear family friend and part of our lives. We shared many occasions together with our group of special friends in Guelph.
I know he will be sorely missed by his many friends in Ontario. We were all looking forward to seeing him next week.
Sincerely
Bev. & Terry Leahey

We have loved Joel for a lifetime it seems. From when he and my brother Kim were in junior high school, Joel was in and out of our house and continued to visit our family almost every Christmas Day. He and Kim always seemed like brothers to me, with the same puckish sense of humour, interest in birdwatching and nature, and interest in politics and current events. Joel’s keen interest in everything was a joy to see and I will miss his letters to the editor and his posts on Facebook. Joel shot my wedding and it was so fun to watch his total engagement with the wedding Murder Mystery at The Deane House. He will be deeply missed. My sincere condolences to Angela and to the Duncan family.

Thank you for the lovely memories Joel! I met Joel on his return from Europe and delighted in hearing his stories told in such a dynamic way. Over the past 3 decades I enjoyed his visits and delighted in watching my son and Joel share his stories/experiences. To me Joel was a kind caring person taking the time to listen. In the past few years he was a great support to me. I will always treasure Joel and those memories in my heart. My sincere condolences. Anita Geddes
