Obituary of Joel Robert Duncan

Please share a memory of Joel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with profound sadness that we announce Joel Robert Duncan tragically left the world on September 14, 2021, at the age of 65. Joel leaves behind his parents Bob and Norma Duncan, sisters Shawn, Tracy (Heather) and Kelly (Cameron), nieces Ashley and Sara, and nephew Cody. He also leaves his life partner Angela Luck and her children, Chloe, Jesse, and Noah. Joel will be missed by loving Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and many friends across Canada.

Joel was born in Nova Scotia and had a love for the East Coast. He was a naturalist, environmentalist, and an avid birdwatcher from a very young age. He spent twenty years volunteering as a Principal Observer for the Rocky Mountain Eagle research Foundation counting golden eagles as they migrated through Kananaskis.

He captured nature through his love of photography and left us an extensive collection of pieces of art. Joel was a professional photographer for much of his life. He studied at Maine Photographic workshops. In addition, he was a talented stand-up comic and worked with A Company of Rogues Actors Studio. Joel was well known for his quick wit and sense of humour passed down to him by his Grandpa Dunn. He loved to make his loved ones laugh everyday. He was an actor and worked on several productions filmed in Alberta and British Columbia. He also worked at Foothills Hospital as an actor in the education program.

Joel and Angela found happiness together and created a beautiful life together. They enjoyed paddling, gardening, cooking, hiking, camping and cross-country skiing with numerous friends, family, and their much-loved dogs. A favorite place to enjoy nature was Beauvais Lake in Southern Alberta, where many happy memories were made at Don and Judy’s cabin.

Joel enjoyed the simplicity of everyday things like looking up cake recipes, and he marvelled at the beauty and majesty of nature and the world around him. It is because of his zeal for life that it makes saying good-bye so hard. We will always carry his cherished memory with us. May Joel’s spirit paddle gentle waters.
