Obituary of Pauline Farley
FARLEY – Pauline Patricia (nee Cooney)
February 24, 1925 - Prince Albert, Saskatchewan
September 22, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta
Pauline Farley beloved wife of the late Edwin Elrick “Rick” Farley of Calgary, Alberta, passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 2021, at the age of 96 years.
Pauline grew up in Prince Albert. She had a great love of animals, and she spent a lot of her free time with the racehorses her dad owned and housed across the street. She became an accomplished rider as her father gave her a retired racehorse. She never forgot her roots of where she grew up, talking about it often.
Pauline and Rick met at the University of Saskatchewan, and were married in Toronto on September 14, 1946, ultimately settling in Calgary in 1959 after stops in Red Deer and Camrose.
Mom always had a genuine interest in all her grandkids doings, and they will miss updating her with visits, emails, “real” letters and cards, and digital pictures and videos.
Pauline enjoyed a few wonderful trips to exciting destinations, and her most memorable were with her sister and best friend Doreen to New Zealand, Spain, and France. Although Doreen and Pauline lived so far apart with Doreen residing in Denver, CO, they spent hours every week on the phone, and shared many items by fax machine and mail. Mom never really filled the void left by Doreen’s passing and missed those almost nightly phone calls.
Mom seemed happiest with a house full of guests at Christmas, a birthday or just any random day. She loved the chaos of a pizza night with kids, grandkids, friends, and anyone else that happened by. Back in the days of Cheyenne Crescent, Sunday was often a roast beef dinner and extra plates were always ready to put out depending on who strolled in. Her lasagna was a hit and word seemed to somehow get out on those nights. She was generous and the door was always open and welcomed everyone.
Mom had a great sense of humor and didn’t mind if the joke was on her.
Pauline loved a cup of tea, hot or reheated from hours before. She had a sweet tooth, and it was easy to please her with chocolate dessert, coconut cookies, or really any sugary baking.
She was of course a lover of cats and dogs and there were many over the years. Ginger in P.A., Tavarich in Toronto, and Calgary critters Mickey, Kous Kous, Ladybird and Angel to name a few, and of course Dixie who kept her company right to the end.
She liked to cheer for the home team and always had a Stampeders sticker on her car bumper. Her favorite Calgary Flame was Dougie Gilmour; we were never quite sure why.
She is survived by her children Jeff (Mary) Farley of Calgary, Debbie (Stephen) Mallery of Eugene OR, Allan Farley of Calgary, Susan (Mike) Morse of Winters, CA, Doug (Amy) Farley of Calgary, and Katherine (Don) Shierman of Airdrie, AB. She also leaves behind thirteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Mom will finally be reunited with Dad who has been waiting since November of 1979 to once again be with the love of his life.
Pauline was the last survivor of her family, following mother Louise, father Charles, sisters Marion, Doreen and Margaret, and brothers Herb and Tom.
A funeral mass will be announced at future date.
