Bernice volunteered with Calgary Meals on Wheels for 35 years, starting in our organization’s infancy in the 1960s. Her dedication ensured her neighbours were well-fed and felt cared for, which in turn helped build a stronger community. On behalf of everyone at Calgary Meals on Wheels, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Bernice during this difficult time.

It has been a privilege to know Bernice for 30 years and to share many moments with her and Karen. Great stories and laughs. It has been an honour to be included in many birthday celebrations and I look forward to next year when we can raise a glass in her honour. May all the family enjoy their personal reflections of this great lady.

I met Bernice in 1989 on one of my first visits to Calgary. Since that day she has become so dear to me; the sparkling, joyful mother of my best friend Karen. Going for a visit to Calgary of course always included a great chat and a cup of tea with Bernice. I especially remember her interest in politics and her love of grapefruit! I was always envious in a way, of the remarkable relationship between Bernice and Karen. The role of caregiver changed over the years, but the friendship and respect between them grew and blossomed. In 2017, Karen and Bernice travelled to Ottawa, where we were able to spend a couple of glorious days together, and Bernice got to see the Parliament buildings for the first time. I am so thankful to have had this lovely woman in my life. My condolences to Karen and Mario, and to the entire Humphrey family.

I will always remember Mrs. Humphrey singing as she worked tirelessly. And she was always perfectly in tune. ;) I will always remember her chocolate cake too. The best in the entire world. But her most special attribute, I have since realized, was that I always felt safe around her - Always accepting and positive. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. The world is a much lesser place without her in it, but heaven surely, has gained a gem.

Karen, Greg, Brent, Cary, Jeff and families … Brenda and I send our love and prayers to all the Humphrey family from Parksville, BC. I first met Bernice a few short years after Karen and I had first met in Calgary and became fast friends. Bernice was always gracious and welcoming and had a wicked sense of humor with an always ready smile and an exuberant laugh. After I transferred from Calgary to the lower mainland, my monthly business trips to Calgary always included a short stay with Karen and Mario. One of the highlights of my trip and stay always included a visit with Bernice. She would pull up to Karen and Mario’s house in her little beige Ford Focus station wagon with her beloved Jack in tow, and come in and just chat, visit, smile and laugh. I still miss that, and miss those visits with her. Bernice touched so many people, and anybody she had the chance to interact with at anytime during her life were touched by her in some special way.
Condolences and much love from Keith and Brenda Hosking, Parksville, BC.

Bernice and Tom were my mom and dad’s best friends, and my Godparents, and as such we saw a lot of the whole family, my oldest friends. So many great memories. Both at our homes and at the Lake, Bernice was a stalwart friend and companion to my mom after my dad died. My visits to Calgary from Ottawa always included a coffee with ‘Aunt Bernice’ at some favourite haunt of the two of them, or later at her house. Conversation picked up where it had last left off. Her passing marks the end of the two families’ parent generation for me. Us kids pick up the torch. I’m so glad to be able to keep in touch. Rest In Peace Aunt Bernice. I will imagine her having coffee with my mom somewhere fun, and the two of them watching over us all.

We have many wonderful memories of Mum, lots of them related to us living next door to her for 16 years. She was always there for us and for the boys. One of the best collective memories of our family is that as soon as Thomas was tall enough to reach the front door handle, he would vanish off to Momma’s house. When Cameron got big enough to walk, the two of them would just go off together and we would get a call asking if we were missing our children. They were always to be found eating toast and jam, grapefruit and drinking orange juice at her breakfast table.
In the winter they would take over Momma’s back deck to build snow couches, and when they came back home, Mum would take over the couch and sit with her book and coffee for a few minutes in the winter sunshine. Mum, we will love you always and treasure our memories of you forever.
Love from Jeff, Amanda, Thomas and Cameron.
