Obituary of Bernice Humphrey
Bernice Humphrey (nee Wickens)
Born in High River, Alberta in June of 1925, Bernice completed her education, including hairdressing training, in Cayley and Calgary. She married Tom in 1945 and raised five children with humour, clear purpose and intellect. Bernice shared her talents as a steadfast friend and accomplished bridge player, community volunteer and advocate, as well as spending time to pursue her passion of music and singing. She loved animals, travelled widely, was well-read and politically astute. Most of all, she was generous sharing her love and wisdom.
As a very young child, Bernice climbed up to the top of the windmill on her family’s Cayley farm. Reluctant to be coaxed down, she protested, “But Daddy, I can see the whole world from here.” Her life was shaped by this sense of curiosity, spunk, creativity and vision.
As a contemporary to everyone, her influence was cross-generational. She provided support, advice and guidance. She played no favourites, took no guff, yet was always there for comfort or a hug. Stalwart to the end, her insights, measured countenance and moral compass live on through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her husband Tom in 2004, she will be greatly missed by her sons and daughters, Gregory and Dorothy; Brent and Barb; Cary and Tracy; Jeffrey and Amanda; Karen and Mario, as well as eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and her Goddaughter Lori Ridgeway.
Bernice truly felt that Whitehorn Retirement Village was her home. The level of compassion, respect and care that the staff showed to her was extraordinary.
In lieu of a service, Bernice requested a gathering on her next birthday, June 26, 2022.
