As a graduate student in Thor's lab, Brian was a wise mentor and helpful colleague to all. He was passionate about science and always keen to ask tough questions to make sure we were well prepared. As a regulator for natural health products at Health Canada, I am often reminded of the importance of drug interactions because of him. I am grateful to have enjoyed his sense of humor and kind nature outside of the lab as well, such as our Cree project retreats and lab celebrations. My sincere condolences to Dedorah and the rest of his family.

It is with fondness and admiration that I send Deborah and all of Brian's family and friends my sincere condolences. I continue to remember Brian as a gentle and affable man and a fellow music lover with a wonderful sense of humour. And as a former colleague I hold him in deepest respect as a public servant par excellence whose ground-breaking work in the wake of the Krever inquiry was key in transforming science policy at Health Canada for a generation. "May the road rise up to meet you."

Our acquaintance with Brian was all too short, just for the last couple of years when He and His wife moved permanently to Nordegg, and prior to that some visits and occasional meals together in earlier years. But we highly appreciated these meetings and interesting and profound conversations that we always held. Now, when Brian moved to a better world we realized how much we miss Him. We miss the annual summer solstice meeting styled after East European customs, we miss the genealogy discussions and talking about our roots and ancestors, we even miss the time when we helped constructing and repairing his greenhouse. We always looked with awe at Brian's efforts in cultivating various plants in the demanding Nordegg climate.
Brian touched us in many ways. He made our small Nordegg community more interesting, deeper and more fun. We will miss Him terribly, but His spirit will live among us and we will remember Him very fondly.
Rest In Peace Brian!
Your friends Pawel and Ewa

I met Brian and his wife Deborah through Music. Brian and Deborah were leading in a Celtic Slow music Jam. Brian played the Bohdran while Deborah played piano. Over the years there were many occasions to enjoy the social aspect of playing music together. Brian will be remembered by many of us who enjoyed Celtic music . We are saddened to hear of his passing so soon after retiring to his Alberta home. I wish to send sympathy and condolences to Deborah and Brian's family, from myself and another fiddle player, Ken Roy. Sincerely, Rowena Stickler

Brian, through his Campbell family research, introduced my family to another world: our Irish heritage and to a world of relatives all around the world that we had no idea existed.
His generosity particularly towards my dad in the last years of his life, meeting him in Australia and then having ongoing conversations with him at Xmas through cards or phone was very much appreciated by my sister and I. Brian brought another dimension to dad's life that was very special.
Brian was a very special person and I'm so glad I got to know him a little through his family history interactions.
My sincere condolences to the family. I know he will be greatly missed.

Brian was my supervisor of my Master’s program and a committee member of My PhD program at University of Ottawa. I first met him in 2006 when I was looking for opportunity of graduate program in Canada. He generously offered me the opportunity of a Master’s program at University of Ottawa despite my poor communication skill in English. During the interview, he asked one of the most unforgettable question of my life “Do you know HPLC?”. 15 years later, HPLC become the absolute keyword of my career.
Brian was a great mentor and friend who changed my life, it is very hard to Imagine what life path I would have if he did take me as his student. I am grateful for his guidance and support through my studies from master’s to PhD. He will be terribly missed.

In 1988, I was newly married and off to Ottawa to join the Bureau of Drug Research, Health Canada. On my first day Brian introduced himself as “So you are the wee lad from BC.” We quickly became friends and colleagues as he and I were the only scientists from BC and Alberta in the Bureau. I owe my success as a scientist in large part to Brian’s mentoring and companionship. He was an accomplished pharmaceutical researcher, brilliant in his thinking, passionate in his teaching, and dedicated to his work and students.
As our friendship grew, our families spent time together canoeing and camping at Bon Echo Park and Gatineau Park, swimming at Nepean Sportsplex where we watched Meredith’s prowess on the diving board, and dining at the Foster’s where we would listen to Deborah on the piano and Brian on the bongo drums. He was proud of his Irish heritage, and shots of Guinness beer or whiskey were always nearby for celebratory toasts. He was a cherished family friend; tears brimmed in his eyes when I asked him to be my daughter’s Godfather.
A few kilometers from my Idyllwild, California home there is a sign “Road to Foster Lake”, a reminder of a life well-travelled and well-lived.
Slàn my friend, but never forgotten. I’ll miss your candor and “bark”.
Cathy, Giselle and I express our sincere condolences to Deborah and Meredith.

Brian was a keen scientific partner with me over the last 30 years, who always had protecting the health of Canadians as his key priority. More importantly, he was a dear friend with whom I loved to share a Guinness or a dram while listening to Irish music and talking about our shared interests in natural health product research and genealogy. Thus, his favourite parting of "Slainte" meant to me his wish for health not only personally but to all people. He is sorely missed already. Robin & JungHee Marles

Brian was my co-supervisor and his love of science was infectious. The only things he loved to chat more about were Deborah and Nordegg. I was fortunate enough to visit his retirement home before it was finished and one could easily understand why he picked the spot. He loved his family and chatted often about Deborah’s loves of piano and salsa dancing. This is a very sudden loss and he will be greatly missed. Deepest condolences to Deborah and Meredith.

I had the honour of having Brian as one of my co-supervisors for my Master’s research project. Working under Brian’s supervision and guidance was a wonderful experience. He was always so kind and supportive, and he always made time for his students even though he worked out of the lab only twice a week. He was an excellent and caring mentor. His vast knowledge of drug interactions still amazes me to this day. Brian also helped me get my career established at Health Canada, and I am so thankful for everything he has done to help me along my path. Brian will truly be missed.

After I moved into the neighbourhood around 1990, Brian and I first met during Condo board activities. We both appreciated proactive management, good value and good financial accounting, and our friendship was on its way. When Jacqueline (now wife) entered the picture in 1993, we crossed paths with Brian (and Deborah) more frequently. For several years, after peaking over to their backyard to see if they were there, we would share a meal, a bottle of wine (or two) and stagger back to our home. Brian got me started on appreciating Port (talking me into waiting for an hour in freezing cold one Saturday morning lined up outside the Byward Market Vintages store for the release of the famed 1994 vintage port).
When our son Thomas was born in 1998, Brian was the first visitor to our home which he proudly bragged about for many years. Even though we left the neighbourhood in 2000, Brian (and Deborah) continued to be part of our lives as extended family members, ever-present in many of our family outings and celebrations. He became a friend, teacher, and guide to our children (Thomas and Julianne) on our many camping trips to Ontario Provincial Parks, noting that all children should know basic canoeing strokes, how to identify the many mushrooms we encountered, how to make quesadillas, etc. He was always interested in their daily lives and activities and was particularly interested in guiding them on their educational paths. He welcomed us to their home in Nordegg when we took a trip to the Rockies and planted a tree for each of the kids – which we hear are growing really well. We will all miss Brian very much. Brian was always ready to help. I will always remember the day at the start of the pandemic he had to leave Ottawa and his pharmacokinetic classes had to be turned into the virtual mode. He first told me he couldn't do it, and then told me he would do it while his moving van delayed coming. Not only were his lectures given on time, but he even helped me mark his part of the exam while he was at Nordeeg.

Brian was a true gentleman and a very dear friend. Rob and I first met Brian and Deborah at the Ottawa Irish Slow Jam group at the Glebe Community Center. I have so many happy memories of playing jigs, reels, polkas and hornpipes with them over the years.....Brian was always ready with a big grin, to keep a steady beat on his bodhran. It was priviledge to have Brian and Deborah join our music group "Celtic Spice and Friends" to entertain folks at many gigs in the Ottawa area. Brian's kindly spirit and love of music will keep the beat going on.....he will be sadly missed.

I had the privilege of meeting Brian when he joined the Rotary Club of West Ottawa, and as old-school pharmacologists found we had much in common on a professional level. On a more social level, we also found that we were both partial to a drop of a good whisk(e)y!
Brian was a wonderful, caring and passionate person, who was unsparing with his friendship, and a pleasure to be with.
I missed him when he moved with Deborah to Nordegg, and will miss him even more now.
I can only hope that Brian was in Heaven for many days before the Divil knew he had gone!

Brian was one of my co-supervisors at the University of Ottawa for my BSc Honours Biology research project and subsequently my MSc Biology research project (from 1998 - 2003) investigating the interaction of various commercial herbal products with the prominent HIV drugs at that time. I learned a lot from Brian about conducting research, writing a good SOP, and lapsang souchong tea! I eventually went on to study pharmacy and became a licensed pharmacist where today I practice both in the community in Ottawa and on a Family Health Team in eastern Ontario. There is not a week that goes by where I do not have at least one herb-drug interaction question that I can confidently answer, and a lot of that confidence comes from my time studying and conducting research in Brian's lab. Having had the privilege of being a co-author with him for my research publications when I was active at the University of Ottawa, I forever owe him thanks. I was also lucky to attend an HIV research conference with him in Winnipeg during that time and with his support and mentoring gave a great presentation.
I last saw Brian and Deborah in Ottawa in the spring of 2019 before they moved out to Nordegg - it was for dim sum at our mutually favourite and excellent Chinese restaurant Mandarin Ogilvie (arguably the best in the city). My wife Caroline and my young girls Daphne and Katriana were there too. After lunch, Brian and Deborah invited us over the the Irish Pub nearby where they were going to meet friends to play music. Brian showed the girls his bodhran and Deborah showed the girls her concertina, and they let them try them out before the practice. It was a really great experience and a wonderful day. Brian was always kind of heart in that way and I will miss him.

When Brian first came to my lab to introduce himself and discuss his ideas for research collaboration I was struck by his commitment and enthusiasm. He was looking for ways to continue his basic research interests and to pursue important ideas about how natural products introduced to Canada could be made safer. We became friends and shared supervision of students. He brought a perspective to my work that i had not considered. But he also brought a personable way about him to our environment and would not miss an opportunity to suggest i go listen to the irish music he and his friends would play at local pubs.
And his passion for the outdoors in particular exploration by canoe was there for all to see (and hear about).
