Obituary of James Calder Guss
July 3, 1946 - Drumheller, Alberta
April 7, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta
Big Jim Guss beloved husband of Margaret Guss (nee Davidson/Eggen) of Keremeos, BC, passed away on Thursday, April 7, 2022, at the age of 75 years, surrounded by his loving family.
He spent most of his life working for AGT/TELUS where he held many different roles but ultimately retired as a Manager for Installation and Repair at the age of 55. He was actively involved in community service throughout his years no matter where he called home. He was the youngest president of the Bowness Community Association, he coached youth softball for many years and enjoyed playing the game himself. He won the Lake Bonavista Downs Community Citizen of the Year award for his fundraising events that went towards building a better community. While in Los Cabos, he volunteered as Santa for underprivileged children and coordinated the Marshal Program at Palmilla Golf club. He was well known for organizing and catering many large social functions for community organizations, and for family and friends.
While working at TELUS, he met the love of his life, Margaret and for the next 36 years they went on “Jim and Margaret’s excellent adventure!” They traveled the world together and settled in Keremeos, BC, and San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico. This allowed his whole family to join in on their excellent adventures and they do!
He looked after everyone and made sure that everyone was included. He made friends everywhere he went. As soon as Jim made a friend, they became part of the family. He was a kind and generous man. He loved nothing more than making people happy, seeing people enjoying themselves and the sound of laughter. Anyone that was fortunate enough to meet him will always remember his great big laugh.
Jim is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Margaret; his children Cathy (Mike), Marnie (Steve), Paulette (Wade) and Ron (Susan); his grandchildren (Cathy) Matthew and Tyler, (Marnie) Sydney and Mya, (Paulette) Spencer and Morgan, (Ron) Adam, Josh and Ashley; and his great-grandson David. Jim is also survived by his mom, Vesta Guss and his siblings Ed, Irene and John, as well as a large extended family and many friends.
Jim’s family is arranging three Celebrations of Life. If you plan on attending the Calgary or Keremeos celebrations, please let them know so they can provide the venues with a rough estimate of guests attending.
These will be informal gatherings, that will start off with a brief eulogy. Friends and family are welcome to come up to the microphone to say a few words, sing a song, etc. Let’s celebrate Jim’s life the way he would have wanted – with a party. Come share some memories and laughs.
