My deepest condolences to Jari's family during this terrible time. Jari and I were partners in a competitive moot in law school and I couldn't have asked for a more patient, supportive and talented man to work with. He won the respect of our moot coach (Judge Danny Steinberg) and if memory serves, the prize for best cross examination. Jari will certainly be missed in this world.

Jari was a giver of energy. Any encounter - whether it was by chance on a street corner on the way to work, at a gig, or at the Oval - left me thinking "there's a guy I'd like to hang out with more." So deeply sorry for Caitlin and Anderson, and for Jari's mom and brother. Condolences to all who loved him. Wish I could have been in Calgary for the send-off; I am sure many glasses will be raised in Jari's name over the days and years to come.

I am so sorry to hear of Jari's passing. We were friends and colleagues and had a trial against one another last year, throughout which Jari and the associate working with me on the case held a friendly battle to see who could wear the nicest and most colourful ties and socks. This daily contest helped to make a stressful time in our lives much easier and more fun. I recently saw Jari and he was very excited to tell me about his engagement. It was good to see him so happy. He will be missed.

My sincere sympathies go to Arja and Mikko, Caitlin and Anderson. I had the privilege of knowing Jari when he was a coach at Burnaby Haida Speed Skating Club where my daughter skated. She developed a wonderful relationship with Jari and held great respect and admiration for him in his capacity as coach. He had a special way with the members of the club, both young and old, and was very generous with his time, knowledge, and support. He was sincerely missed in may ways when his life took him to Alberta. Jari was a special person.

Jari was my speed skating coach in Burnaby back when I was 7 years old. The impact that he had on both my brother and I over the next few years with his wise, technical advice and positive encouragement at the rink still isn't forgotten to this day. Later down the road, as I too pursued speed skating and university in Calgary, I was happily surprised to run into him at the Olympic Oval, but this time as a referee in the sport. Nonetheless, Jari still shared his contagious positivity and warm smile, as I would nervously be competing. I felt so incredibly proud when he would compliment me on a race or a simple pass, after the competition was over. It's difficult to believe that we will no longer have the honour of having Jari as part of our skating community. That being said, I will always remember Jari and the part of my life he helped shape as an athlete, and I am certain many others feel the same. My deepest condolences to his family and all loved ones.

I met Jari through the Burnaby Haida Speed skating Club. Jari was a talented and giving coach. It always amazed me how a young man would come back and help out at the club and devote time equally to all of the skaters. He had a beautiful way about him. I am so sorry to hear of his passing and want to offer my deepest condolences to his family.

We first met Jari when he was 7 years old at the Burnaby Speed Skating Club. Jari was a serious and quiet boy with a wonderful sense of humour. Those personality traits do not seem to go together well, however Jari carried them off like no one else could. Jari cared deeply for his family and he was a VERY loyal son. I envied how much he cared for his Mother Arja. Jari loved his Mother and respected her immensely. Arja helped Jari become the wonderful man he was. Yes, I was jealous of how well Jari treated his Mother. Jari was a loving and caring son to his Mother, Father and Brother and we understand also to Caitlin and Anderson. It was very clear how much Jari loved his family and I am sure that same transferred to his fiancé and son. Our deepest sympathies go out to you all. When Jari was a young teenager he stated that his aspiration was to become a lawyer, and he followed through with that dream. When Jari wanted to accomplish something, he did it. We are very sad that the world has lost a such wonderful man. Steve Elaine Cam Fraser Kim and Sean

I met Jari in law school. I don't think I ever beat him at pool but we played a lot at the pub. He was quiet about it. He never gloated. I suspect that was his approach to just about everything. Quiet, humble yet fiercely competitive and good at what he set out to achieve. We kept in touch, not often enough. He danced in a panda suit at our band's performance at Rock for Dimes in Calgary. Even that he did well. Jari was and is and old soul. Thoughtful, considerate, kind. The kind of friend you know you will have forever, even if contact is sparse. Caitlin, I send all my thoughts and love your way. He loved you so much. You made him so happy. Live on and thrive in his memory. If ever you need anything, please get in touch.

My deepest condolences to all of Jari's loved ones. I first met Jari when he was a teen making plans to go to school and train in Calgary. After he graduated and returned to Vancouver, he generously gave back to the Burnaby club by coaching. He was a great coach. When he moved back to Calgary and started officiating, the club members loved it when he would return to BC to chief the Burnaby meets. He was a great official. Jari always showed by example the power of meeting challenges directly, and of living life honestly, generously, and enthusiastically. When I last saw him in March he was clearly a happy man living life well. He will be deeply missed.

We are shocked and saddened by Jari's sudden passing. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family here in Burnaby, and to his fiancé and son in Calgary. We remember Jari as a boy growing up in Burnaby. He and our son, Steve, were classmates and teammates. Reading the obituary, it looks like Jari grew up to be a very fine and caring man; this does not surprise us because we remember the polite and caring boy that he was. This is how we will remember him. With deepest sympathies, Rob and Kim Aasen

I can't express my sorrow with the words available. I worked with Jari for a year when he articled in the same office I was in. I got to know much about his character and I had a sense of what drove him. We kept in touch, not always during good times it seems. He always told me that he wanted to have children and I hoped so much that he would because he would have been such a wonderful father. He was a reliable, dedicated, devoted thoughtful compassionate man. He was humble. He inspired me to be more selfless. We've lost a wonderful person in our lives. I learned from Jari. I will carry that with me.

Was deeply shocked and saddened by the news of Jari's untimely passing. I didn't know him that well, but every interaction I had with him over the last many years was positive. We will all miss his smile as well as the personal qualities that he brought to the sport. Deepest condolances to his family and friends.

Dear Arja, Mikko, Caitlin and Anderson, I am really struggling to find the words to express just how heavy my heart is for all of you. Our families basically grew up together going from rink to rink every weekend and Jari and I both ended up in Calgary chasing our dreams. In the past 10 years, Jari and I didn't see too much of each other but when we did our friendship never skipped a beat. I will always remember Jari for his intelligence, kindness, quirky sense of humour, and his smile that could light up a room. I am so proud of how he accomplished so much in his short 37yrs and to be able to call him my friend. On behalf of the Kraus family, our deepest condolences to all of you. xo

I got to know Jari as opposing counsel at the City on a number of expropriation files. I was stunned to hear of his passing. He will be missed.

My husband Kelly Johnston and I are very saddened by the loss of Jari. Words cannot say. Kelly went to law school with Jari and worked in Surrey with him. Before we got married we lived a few blocks from Jari and Hilary in the West End of Vancouver and so we spent many a night in English Bay pubs and even met up with them for a memorable trip to Havana Cuba. Many years later, after Jari moved to Calgary and we had a newborn Jari came to visit us. Even though we hadn't seen Jari regularly in the past few years we talked of him often and we were so happy with his new found happiness in life. He was taken much too soon.

I met Jari through his wish to give back to the sport of speed skating. He was one of the best referees I have worked with. Jari was direct but honest. I remember the day that something seemed different with him. It only took a few seconds for him to offer that he had new and very special people in his life. I do not remember, from that day forward ever having a conversation that did not include in some manner his new family. Or for that matter Jari having time for a Crown Float at the pub! Jari if he liked you, you knew it.......for those he loved and has left behind my sincerest condolences. The next time in Calgary a Crown Float wil be tilted in Jari's honour.
