I remember my dadu as a kind loving character. He always put other peoples happiness before his own as an attempt to brighten the world. Over the years I’ve understood what it means to be a role model and what a person to look up to means. He always wanted to explore and was always ten steps ahead on all hiking trails. He loves to spend time with family. My Dadu will stay in my heart forever as I miss him too much. I love you forever, -Arin Makhija

Dadu, I will miss you loads. You would always be there for me, whether it be putting a smile on my face and making me laugh, giving me countless gifts on every occasion, or driving me around town to my practices, or even just for fun. Every thing that you had you would always share with us, all the way down to Solitaire on your phone. Not a day will go by where I won't think of you, think of something you did, something you would do. I will always love you and have you in my heart, from beginning to end. Papa…. For me this one word is a complete world in itself. I close my eyes and all I can see is your beautiful smile and all my pain ceases to exist. That’s how powerful that vivacious smile of yours is! You are effortlessly perfect! Papa, I can never forget the wonderful memories of Shimla. We used to stay there for a month as you would always combine your work with our holidays. I remember we used to bring bags full of utensils and uncooked rice and dal along with the heating stove for our dinner. The ‘Coolie’ used to say, “Babuji kya patthar bhar ke laaye ho!” and we all would just smile away. And boy were those the most delicious meals ever! Mom, Tippy and I would wait for you to come back from work every day so we could listen to your stories and plan our next adventure. Talking about the next adventure, I know mom told me about your plans to go to Jagannath Puri temple to complete all ‘Char dhams’, and your plans to go to Shillong, Darjeeling and Guwahati as well as our plans to go to Guilin and Zhangjiajie in China. Yes papa, let’s plan soon! Papa, you have taught me how to be kind yet strong and courageous, wise yet spontaneous, adventurous yet grounded, motivated and yet respectful. Papa…. For me this one word is a complete world in itself. I close my eyes and all I can see is your beautiful smile and all my pain ceases to exist. My Nanu has one of the kindest, purest and most compassionate souls there is. He was selfless and giving, and never missed a chance to help somebody. I remember his lovely laugh and bright smile as we played with him every time he visited home, and the suitcase full of gifts him and Nani brought for us every year. He brought so much happiness and joy into my life, and for that I am forever grateful. Rest in peace Nanu. You will always hold a very special place in my heart.

My grandfather was and always will be the most spirited person that I know. Nobody could match his drive, his optimism, his energy, his courage, his wisdom; he was completely full of life. It was as if he could see what everyone else couldn’t, the secret to life and to always being happy. He never took anything too seriously and he could always find a way to make a joke out of anything, which let him achieve the freedom that life offers. He grabbed life by its horns and steered it to his will, all the way until the end. The one thing I will never forget about him is his laugh. The cheekiness behind every sound, the little chuckle with a grin attached to it. The comfort you felt hearing his laugh, even if he was just doing it for you. He loved to make jokes to make others laugh, and I found myself doing the same just so I could hear his. My grandfather had a great knack for playing cards, which is probably where I got it from. The last game we played together, him and I were in the endgame, and he lost. I guess I’m the one who now has to carry on his legacy of winning. And what puts him over the top is that he is completely selfless. I remember every time him and my grandmother came to visit, he would bring two extra suitcases just full of gifts for me and my sister. He was always thinking of other people, and every action he took reflected that. He held so much love in his little heart, and his love is still here, in everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. There is nothing more for me to say, because every single person that he encountered was positively impacted by his kindness, and I know through that he will always be remembered. Om Prakash - you were here in this world and lived a life true to your name. Om - the divine sound that links us all together - just like you did, keeping everyone as one. Prakash - the light and radiance that you emitted, giving comfort and direction to whomever came in contact with you. You, my Mamaji, had the gentlest and such a calm persona - always a smile on your face, always ready to offer a helping hand. Without even trying, you have touched many a lives, in so many parts of the world, your grounded nature was an anchor for all your loved ones. You will be missed - your laugh, gleaming eyes, always ready for the next plan, next mission! We have lost a great person from our lives, you have left so many good memories for us to cherish and be nostalgic over. You did not deserve the pain you went through and even through all the suffering you put on a brave smile, to provide comfort to us all. I am so relieved that you are free from that horrible agony and I can see you sitting with Biji enjoying the ‘Churi’ made by her just for you! Mamaji, you have led an inspirational life and we have so much to learn from you. I feel fortunate that I was born related to you and had the opportunity to spend most of our summer holidays at your home in Chandigarh. This part of my childhood, I shall never forget. Thank you, so much. Lastly, I would like to say, that your legacy will live on. You have brought up two amazing children - who live and shine by your principles. They have and will do you proud! Papa's radiant soul has truly left a lasting impression in our heart, with his love, kindness, and ever-present benevolence. As his son-in-law, or as he called me that I am his son first, I feel immensely grateful to have known such a remarkable person of goodness for so long. His selfless spirit will continue to inspire us all, as we celebrate the beautiful memories and cherish the incredible legacy he leaves behind. I would like to extend a special mention to Rupika and Gaurav who were there for him during his last few years when he was battling with Cancer. Their love, care and support were invaluable to him, and I am sure he felt blessed to have them by his side. They have truly shown what it meant to be a loving and supporting family, I am grateful for their kindness and compassion. Please know that I am here for you and your family if you need anything at all. May your father soul rest in peace, and may you find comfort and solace in the memories you shared with him. I would also like to mention his grandchildren, Avi, Arin, Arshia and Akaisha who brought him so much joy and happiness. He was so proud of his grandchildren and cherished the time he spent with them. They were a bright light in his life, and he loved them dearly. Papa you will be missed dearly, and we all know God had a better plan and place for you and you will spread the same kindness, happiness and joy there as well. A few days before your death you gave me call and spoke to me on phone regarding my health even though you were on bed.
